Social media prompts hour of prayer event

After the kidnapping and murder of 10-year-old Hailey Owens in Springfield, child abduction has come a little too close to home.

In response to Owen’s death, the San Raphael Sisters, a women’s faith group from the St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, is holding a community-wide hour of prayer from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday and the St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, 345 Grand Ave. Pat Hammond, who originally conceived the idea for a community-wide hour of prayer after reading comments about Owens on Facebook, said that she got up early Thursday morning and was perusing the social media site when she noticed people were posting that they were keeping their porch lights on and were planning to wear pink and purple today to show support for Owens and her family. Hammond thought that those gestures were nice, but she was inspired to do something else.
