Newly elected Lebanon City Council members were sworn in at Monday night’s meeting. They are, from left, Ken Eldridge in Ward 1, Jim White in Ward 2, Randy Wall in Ward 3 and Bob Garner in Ward 4.

The Lebanon City Council said goodbye to outgoing Council member Esther Hurney and welcomed Ken Eldridge in Ward One at Monday night’s council meeting.

Two of the newly elected councilmen were first appointed to office by Mayor Josh Ray, who recalled what happened a year ago after his election. “When I took office in April, within a month I had three council members leave,” he said. “They departed, so I was scrambling, trying to find replacements.” He appointed Randy Wall and Bob Garner to the council. Both won election to their seats in last week’s election and were sworn in to their new terms Monday night.

After those appointments, Ray decided the council needed some experience and turned to a former member who had just departed the city council.

“I thought to myself, ‘Holy cow, I’m new, Randy’s new, Bob’s new, (Councilman Gib Adkins is) new. We need some experience. So I went to Esther,” he said. “She wanted to make sure it was my idea to bring her back. After some begging she capitulated to my request, and she has served us well for almost a year.”

“She does her due diligence,” he said. “I think everyone up here appreciates her efforts and I certainly do,” Ray said.

Hurney, who served Ward 1 for three terms and was appointed to serve for an additional year, then said her goodbyes.
