U.S. Judge David Gregory Kays will be the featured speaker at this year's School Bell Awards.

An awards ceremony next week will honor local teachers and school staff for their many years of service.

On May 4, the third annual School Bell Awards dinner and recognitions will be held at the Wallace Center at 6 p.m. At the event, four Laclede County School personnel will be recognized for their careers in the education of Laclede County’s youth.

The 2017 honorees are Audra Sharp from the Lebanon R-3 School District, Barbara Burnett from Joel E. Barber C-5 School, Charlene Pannell from the Lebanon R-3 School District and Lester Capps from the Lebanon R-3 School District.

According to event promoter and organizer Dr. Tom Luthy, each honoree will receive an engraved school bell from the Retired School Personnel organization.

“It’s just a little something to let them know we appreciate their service in the school system. We have some good people in the Laclede County School districts, and this is a great way to thank them,” Luthy said.

This year, the event will feature U.S. Judge David Gregory Kays as the featured speaker. Kays grew up in Lebanon, and attended the Lebanon R-3 School District.

“It’s an honor to have Greg at the ceremony. I’ve known him for years, and worked with him. He’s a great man, and we’re very happy to have him speak for us,” Luthy said.

Luthy encourages family members of the honorees and anyone who is interested in the event to make plans to attend.
