Lebanon sophomores Trevor Christian and Landen Smith qualified for the Cadet Duals and will represent Team Missouri June 13-18 in York, Pa.

To qualify and be a part of Team Missouri, the wrestler must place first or second place at the Freestyle state tournament or place first during the Greco state tournament.

When wrestling Greco, wrestlers are not allowed to touch their opponent’s legs, only upper body. In freestyle, you may touch your opponents legs and upper body.

At the Cadet Duals, most states will be represented by wrestlers all around the country, and about eight states, including Missouri, have two teams.

The Cadet division is an age division of freshman and sophomores. Christian and Smith both qualified for the prestigious event at the Missouri Freestyle State Tournament in early May held in Sedalia.

Christian brought home first place in the Cadets division at 145 pounds, when he tech falled his former freestyle state champion, Michael Cassidy of Waynesville in the championship match, 11-1. He also won the Greco state tournament against Blake Berryman of Staley High School.

“I was relaxed and wrestled hard,” Christian said about his performances during the two tournaments. “I stayed focused and acted like it was same as any other wrestling tournament.”

During the school season, Christian finished his freshman season with a record of 53-17 and finished fifth at the Missouri Class 4 state championships in Columbia at 132 pounds.

Smith took second place at both the freestyle event and the Greco state tournament in the Cadet division at 220 pounds.

“I had a couple of really good throws,” Smith said about his performance. “I kept all my matches close and controlled what I could control.”
