Howard Fuller of the Route 66 Association speaks at the Lebanon City Council work session Thursday night. He wants the city to place signs identifying Elm Street and other streets as Route 66.

Signs should be erected renaming Elm Street and Mill Creek Road through Lebanon to Route 66, the Lebanon City Council was told Thursday night.

In fact, the name change is already a matter of law, Howard Fuller, board member of the Route 66 Society, said in a presentation during a council work session meeting Thursday night. He pointed to a state law from 1998 calling for all roadways that were part of the original United States Route 66 to be renamed “Route 66.”  A Lebanon city ordinance also made the same change.

“The city should refer to it as Route 66,” he said. “The law is pretty plain.”

Fuller said this should not create an issue for mailing addresses along Route 66. He said the  postal service has already made a decision allowing people to keep their current street address.
