Mizzou downs Missouri State in rivalry game on Sunday

In a much-anticipated rivalry game between in-state opponents, the Missouri women’s basketball team defeated the Missouri State Lady Bears on Sunday at JQH Arena in Springfield, 69-59.

Mizzou came into the matchup ranked No. 23 in the nation, and according to the poll results that come out every Monday, the Tigers stayed in the same spot.

With less than eight minutes remaining the Tigers led the Bears by just two points, but Mizzou was able to pull away towards the end of the game thanks to free throws from Cierra Porter and a layup from former Marshfield basketball standout Lauren Aldridge. Porter added a basket late in the game to give Mizzou a 10-point lead with 2:35 left in the game. The Lady Bears were held without a field goal for more than five minutes of game clock during the momentum swing.

Aldridge played a team-high 37 minutes and posted six points and five assists while committing just one turnover.

Missouri shot 53.2 percent in the game compared to .349 for the Lady Bears, though MSU hit eight triples compared to a 4-for-19 showing from MU.

Former Stoutland basketball standout Alexa Willard started the game for the Lady Bears and finished the game with two points on 1-3 shooting from the field in 24 minutes of play.
