The Lebanon High School girls’ basketball team picked up a much-needed win on Saturday afternoon over the Belton Pirates, winning 47-36 in the seventh-place game of the Emerson/Arvest Bank I-44 Showcase.

In the tournament, the ‘Jackets fell to Incarnate Word Academy (No. 1 Class 4) on Thursday afternoon and Walnut Grove (No. 1 Class 1) on Friday afternoon.

The ‘Jackets did an excellent job of pressuring the Pirates, forcing lots of turnovers that led to easy baskets.

Lebanon head coach Brendan Kelley said coming into the game, pressuring Belton was something he had anticipated on doing.

“We really thought that we could pressure them, so we came out with our press and 1-3-1 trap and pretty much stuck with it all day,” Kelley said about the execution of the gameplan. “I was really pleased with our press and the fact that when we weren't turning Belton over, we were getting back and not giving up layups. I thought that Baylei Palmer and Grace Calhoun kind of sparked our defense off the bench.”

Heading into halftime, Lebanon led the Pirates 22-15, and a big third quarter from LHS gave them the push they needed to hold on for their first win in their last five games after playing a tough part of their schedule the past two weeks.

“It was huge for us to get the win in the last game of the tournament,” Kelley said. “We start conference play back up next week with Joplin, so we wanted some momentum going into that.

“Losing streaks can really wear on players and coaches, so anytime you end a losing streak you feel like a huge weight is lifted off of your chest.”
